From Chile to Berlin
Monna is the tattoo artist infusing the Good Old Times Tattoo Studio in Berlin with vibrant Chilean vibes.
Drawing and painting have been her passions for as long as she can remember. Her fascination with tattoos began at age 12 when she saw her first tattoo and was instantly amazed. In her excitement, she got a small tattoo (which she still has!), though she wouldn’t recommend getting one so young!! Once she was old enough to get tattooed legally, she seized every opportunity, constantly asking questions and absorbing knowledge from the artists. Many of her friends at the time were tattooers who generously shared their insights.
After years immersed in the Chilean tattoo scene, Monna felt ready to embark on her own tattooing journey. In 2017, she began tattooing, initially practicing on friends and neighbors at home. As her skills improved, she started working in a tattoo studio. During her second year, she met her best friend and mentor, who has since guided her in perfecting her technique.
In her early years, Monna experimented with various styles, including black and grey realism, to hone her craft. However, she found herself artistically unfulfilled. That’s when she decided to embrace her true artistic identity.
Cute and bold Kawaii tattoos
Monna wanted to convey tenderness as a powerful statement, reflecting her belief that caring for the vulnerable – animals, babies, nature, and ourselves – is both a personal and social responsibility. She aimed to create art that combined cuteness with strength, boldness, and brightness. This vision led her to focus on kitties, inspired by Horitomo’s Monmon Cats and the Japanese aesthetic. It became clear that Japanese tattooing would be the cornerstone of her personal style. Her main influences include artists from the Ukiyo-e tradition (Japanese woodblock prints) and contemporary creators like Akio Harada and Felicia Chiao.
Today, Monna continues to tattoo cute and bold characters, offering both flash designs and large projects like back pieces and full sleeves. Her work often draws on Japanese folklore and mythology, always with a whimsical twist.
